LEADERS TO BRING URGENT DEMANDS TO COP30

Leaders from various sectors met in Bonito, Mato Grosso do Sul, Brazil, to discuss topics that should shape COP30 in November, which will be held in Brazil. Sustainability experts, politicians, and businesspeople from different regions of the country stated that there is no more time to defer the issue of climate change to the future.

It's essential to talk and act in the present.

Implementing measures to reduce the impacts caused by global warming requires financial investments and awareness.

The event was promoted by Lide, a group that brings together leaders from 34 economic sectors with the mission of strengthening free enterprise and the socioeconomic development of nations.

Lide was founded by businessman and former governor of São Paulo, João Dória Jr.

In Bonito, in addition to Dória, other members of the network participated, such as former Brazilian ministers Izabella Teixeira (Minister of Environment and Climate Change of Brazil, 2010-2016) and Henrique Meirelles (Minister of Finance, 2016-2018).

Hélder Barbalho, governor of Pará, the state hosting COP30, revealed the pillars that should be presented at the global climate event after the Lide meeting.

"Valuing forest assets through cellulose, a biofuel strategy so we can diversify our energy matrix, and, through biofuel, reconcile the demands for fossil fuels with the addition of clean fuel. And also mediating strategies for food production with preservation and responsibility."

Three panels were held during the forum in Bonito: green economy, business opportunities, and the role of agribusiness.

For former minister Izabella Teixeira, president of the UN's International Resource Panel, combating fires in strategic areas like the Pantanal requires uniting public authorities and private initiative. The fires, in addition to destroying the habitat of thousands of animals, release an immense amount of carbon into the atmosphere.

"Here, in Mato Grosso do Sul, more overtures are being made; the private sector has rushed to understand that this warming can lead to new destruction. Nature, on the other hand, is recovering, and that's expected. That there will be resilience. What is that? Climate change is a reality in the 21st century; it's not something that will happen. It is happening. COP30 will be the first to take place with the world already truly undergoing transformation, in a country where this is exposed."

The 30th COP (UN Climate Change Conference) will be held from November 10 to 21 in Belém, capital of Pará.
