Since the beginning of this year, 6 femicides have been recorded in Mato Grosso do Sul. The last one was on March 1st, in Campo Grande, the state capital. Gisele Cristina Oliskowiski, 40, was killed by her husband, Jeferson Nunes Ramos. With a stone, he struck the woman's head, threw her into a well, and set her on fire. The autopsy will determine if she was still alive when she was burned. Jefferson, a confessed murderer, said he reacted to three slaps in the face delivered by Gisele. On February 1st, Renan Dantas invaded the cell phone case store of his ex-wife, Karina Corin, in Caarapó. She was with a friend, Aline Rodrigues. Security cameras recorded the entire action. Renan killed both with a revolver and took his own life. On February 12th, journalist Vanessa Ricarte was killed by her ex-fiancé with three stab wounds, also in the capital. Caio Nascimento, a musician with an extensive history of domestic violence, is in custody awaiting trial. The crime took place at her home. Vanessa had just returned from the police station where she had requested a restraining order against the man for threats. This fact triggered a great revolt and generated a huge discussion about the effectiveness of security measures for victims of domestic violence and about the service of the specialized police station for women. The Minister of Women, Cida Gonçalves, was in Campo Grande to analyze the case. An investigation by the ombudsman is investigating why the delegate did not send a police patrol to accompany Vanessa to her house, where she would pick up her clothes to stay with relatives. The state government created a working group with the civil police to diagnose, improve, and accelerate investigations of crimes committed against women, with the aim of ensuring more efficiency in the service of the Specialized Police Station for Women (DEAM). While nothing changes, the crimes continue. Six days after Vanessa's death, Juliana Domingues was murdered with sickle blows by her husband, Wilson Garcia. The violence took place in the indigenous village of Nhu Porã, in Dourados, the second largest city in the state. On February 22nd, in Água Clara, Fausto Júnior Aparecido Oliveira shot his wife, Mireli Santos, in the abdomen, who did not resist the injury and died. Two days later, also in Dourados, Emiliana Mendes was strangled to death by her boyfriend Vanderson dos Santos. He fled but was captured. In 2024, Mato Grosso do Sul recorded 35 femicides. In 2023, 30. Femicide was classified as a crime in Brazil in 2015. It is specific to deaths against women caused by domestic or family violence and contempt or discrimination due to the condition of being a woman. Last year, the federal government made the penalties harsher for this type of crime, which can lead the murderer to serve up to 40 years in prison.
