Biopark promotes fish immunization
The largest freshwater complex in the world, home to over four hundred species from five continents, Pantanal Biopark launched a fish immunization campaign to prepare its animals for the approaching seasonal transition.
According to zootechnician Frederico Vasconcelos, delivering the medication through food is the most effective method, since diluting it in the water tanks would require a much higher quantity.

Prepared at Biopark itself, the fish feed includes vegetables, premixes, and, for carnivorous species, proteins. Because the immunity medication is light-sensitive, the feed is prepared in a dark environment at the lab. Around 35 kilograms of feed are produced weekly and offered once a day.
Veterinarian Edson Pontes explains that, like humans, animals experience a drop in immunity during changes in temperature or season. Thus, in natural rivers, fish are less likely to transmit diseases due to the lower population density.
However, in tanks with limited water volume, the risk of transmission increases.
The campaign promotes animal health and also stimulates fish reproduction. As a result, it positively impacts contemplative tourism in Mato Grosso do Sul, which brings around 30,000 visitors to the Biopark every month.
According to Biopark director Maria Fernanda Balestieri, the exhibitions go beyond simple observation. The goal is to create a space of experience and knowledge for everyone, where the animals serve as tools for environmental education.
