The caretaker of a farm in the Pantanal, on the banks of the Miranda River in Aquidauana, was attacked and killed by a jaguar.
The information comes from the Environmental Military Police of Mato Grosso do Sul.
Known as Jorginho, the man—wearing a cap—appears in a video recorded about a month ago, in which he shows a man he refers to as his brother-in-law the tracks of two jaguars that had apparently fought near his house.
The brother-in-law is impressed by the size of the tracks and even jokes that the jaguars might attack Jorginho.
The caretaker’s death was discovered after customers went to the farm to buy honey and found a trail of blood and jaguar tracks.
In another video, the men attempt to reconstruct the attack.
It is suspected that Jorginho was in the house’s kitchen when he was surprised by the animal. He may have tried to escape via a walkway when he was attacked. At the scene, in addition to blood, there were pieces of flesh.
However, the body has not yet been found.
Environmental police experts were sent to the scene of the attack to investigate the circumstances. Local river dwellers report that there are many jaguars in the region.
But attacks on humans are rare.
