Toucan hydrates itself at sink in Bonito resort
The scene was recorded by animal scientist and geography teacher Alan Arguelho at the Municipal Resort of Bonito in Mato Grosso do Sul. He was leaving the restroom when he saw the toucan (Ramphastos toco) perched on the sink. A staff member turned on the faucet, and the bird took the opportunity to drink water.
The temperature in Bonito is around 30°C (86°F), with humidity at 39%.
Toucan
Toucans belong to the order Piciformes and the family Ramphastidae. There are about 30 species, found mainly in Brazil, Mexico, and Argentina. Their most distinctive feature is their lightweight yet strong pneumatic beak, which also helps disperse heat due to its high vascularization.
These birds are non-migratory, arboreal, and live in flocks, feeding primarily on fruits while occasionally supplementing their diet with insects and small prey.
Resort
The Municipal Resort of Bonito is one of the town's most traditional attractions. It is bordered by the Formoso River, known for its crystal-clear waters and abundance of fish, especially *piraputangas* (*Brycon microleps*).
The site features several bathing areas along a 200-meter stretch of the river. Some sections are shallower, making them ideal for families with children.
The resort offers day-use infrastructure, including parking, snack bars, a restaurant, sports courts, restrooms, and barbecue-equipped kiosks. In addition to toucans, visitors often spot macaws and capuchin monkeys.
