For 30 days, a team consisting of seven cowhands (including a cook and a cattle driver) crossed the Pantanal of Nhecolândia, in Aquidauana, heading toward the city of Rochedo, in Mato Grosso do Sul, with 1,000 heads of Nelore cattle. Traveling across the Pantanal’s dirt roads was the only option to bring the cattle into the city, as there are no roads for truck transport. Therefore, the cowhands drove the cattle from five in the morning until four in the afternoon every day, rain or shine. At night, farmers would offer lodging to the group. A cook always traveled ahead with the donkeys and supplies to prepare lunch and dinner. The owner of the cattle did not wish to be identified, but he mentioned that he does this type of transportation up to six times a year.
The final leg of the journey was crossing the town of Rochedo. The state highway police were notified and provided security to prevent accidents. The cattle were delivered to a farm belonging to the same group in Rochedo. The cattle fattening process takes 90 days before being sent to slaughterhouses in the state.
